As a self-professed “almost local,” I’ve stayed in Kiev more than two dozen times in the past two years thanks to layovers, festivals and events, and just for fun. Kiev has become part of my commute, because the only way I can travel from my hometown is to always have a layover in Kiev.

Ukraine is one of the most underrated countries to travel to. It has everything you could want, from the luscious green mountains of the Carpathians, to the bustling boutiques located along Kiev’s Khreschatnyk street, to the museums and cafes of Lviv. That’s not even mentioning the sizzling beaches of Odessa or the perfect cobblestone streets of Chernivtsi. If you’re a budget traveler, you’re especially in luck: Ukraine is one of the cheapest countries in Europe!
